Shelvin Bernard Mack Jr. (born April 22, 1990) is an American former professional basketball player. He now works as a sports analyst for CBS Sports. Shelvin played for eight seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was part of seven different NBA teams during his career. Before turning pro, Mack played college basketball for the Butler Bulldogs. He was a key starter for their teams that reached the Final Four in both 2010 and 2011.

High School Basketball Star
Shelvin Mack went to Bryan Station High School in Lexington, Kentucky. In his senior year (2007–08), he was an amazing player. He scored about 24 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and made 7 assists per game. He also had nearly 4 steals per game. Mack was named to the Lexington All-City team. He helped lead his team, the Defenders, to an impressive 30–3 record.
College Career at Butler
Freshman Year Success
At Butler University, Mack started every game in his first year. He played in all 32 games. He tied a Butler freshman record for most games started. This record was shared with his teammates Ronald Nored and Gordon Hayward. Mack was named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer team. He also made the Horizon League All-Tournament team. He led the Bulldogs in assists during the 2008–09 season. He was only the third freshman in Butler's history to get 100 assists. In these 32 games, he averaged 11.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 3.5 assists.
Winning Gold with Team USA
During the summer after his freshman year, Mack played for Team USA. He helped his team win the gold medal. This was at the 2009 FIBA Under-19 World Championship. He averaged 5.9 points per game in that tournament.
Sophomore Season Highlights
In his second year, Mack was named to the All-Horizon League first team. He also made the NABC All-District 12 first team. He was again on the Horizon League All-Tournament team. He also made the West Regional All-Tournament team. He started all 38 games that season. He averaged 14.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists. He helped lead Butler to the 2010 National Championship game. They played against Duke, but narrowly lost.
Junior Year and NBA Draft
In his junior year, Mack was named to the All-Horizon League second team. He also made the NABC All-District 12 second team. He became the 33rd player in Butler history to score 1,000 career points. In 38 games (37 starts), he averaged 16.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.4 assists. On April 21, 2011, he decided to enter the NBA draft. This meant he gave up his final year of college basketball.
Professional Basketball Journey
Washington Wizards (2011–2012)
On June 23, 2011, the Washington Wizards picked Mack. He was the 34th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft. He signed with the Wizards on December 9, 2011. This was after the NBA lockout ended. On February 1, 2012, he scored 12 points. This was his highest score at the time.
Maine Red Claws and Philadelphia 76ers (2012–2013)
In July 2012, Mack played for the Wizards in the NBA Summer League. He was later waived by the Wizards in October 2012. On November 2, the Maine Red Claws picked him in the NBA Development League draft. He rejoined the Wizards briefly in December 2012. Then he was waived again in January 2013. He went back to the Red Claws. On January 17, 2013, Mack signed a short contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. He played for them for a short time before returning to the Red Claws. He was chosen to play in the 2013 NBA D-League All-Star Game.
Atlanta Hawks (2013–2016)

On March 6, 2013, Mack signed a contract with the Atlanta Hawks. He later signed a two-year deal with them. In July 2013, he played for the Hawks in the NBA Summer League. On February 21, 2014, he scored 21 points. This was his new career high. In the 2013–14 season, he played 73 games. He averaged 7.5 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.7 assists. On August 22, 2014, Mack signed a new contract with the Hawks. On December 17, 2014, he scored a career-high 24 points. He made 6 out of 6 three-pointers in that game.
Utah Jazz (2016–2017)
On February 18, 2016, Mack was traded to the Utah Jazz. This trade involved three teams. He was reunited with his former Butler teammate Gordon Hayward. He also joined former Hawks assistant coach Quin Snyder. Mack played his first game for the Jazz on February 21. He scored 16 points and had 6 assists. In the next game, he became the starting point guard. On March 11, he scored a career-high 27 points. This helped the Jazz win against the Washington Wizards. On December 8, 2016, Mack scored 19 points.
Orlando Magic (2017–2018)
On July 9, 2017, Mack signed with the Orlando Magic. In the 2017–18 NBA season, Mack led the Magic in assists. He averaged 3.9 assists per game. He was waived by the Magic on June 25, 2018.
Memphis Grizzlies and Charlotte Hornets (2018–2019)
On August 7, 2018, Mack signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. On February 7, 2019, he was traded back to the Atlanta Hawks. He was then waived by the Hawks the next day. On February 10, 2019, the Charlotte Hornets picked him up.
Playing Overseas (2019–2021)
On July 25, 2019, Mack signed a two-year deal with Olimpia Milano in Italy. He played in 19 games for Milano. He averaged 5.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists. On January 16, 2020, Mack left Milano. He joined Hapoel Jerusalem in Israel for the rest of the season. On November 7, 2020, Mack signed a short deal with Panathinaikos in Greece. His contract was later extended for the whole 2020–2021 season. On June 6, 2021, Mack left the Greek team. He played in 23 Greek League games and 21 EuroLeague games. He averaged 6.5 points, 2 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Life After Playing: Broadcasting
In March 2022, Mack worked as a commentator for the 2022 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. He is now an analyst for the CBS Sports show Inside College Basketball.
