Shelvin Bernard Mack Jr. (born April 22, 1990) is an American former professional basketball player. He played for eight seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with seven different teams. After his playing career, Mack became an analyst for CBS Sports.

Shelvin Mack was a star player in college for the Butler Bulldogs. He helped his team reach the Final Four in the NCAA tournament two years in a row, in 2010 and 2011.

High School Career

Shelvin Mack went to Bryan Station High School in Lexington, Kentucky. In his final year, 2007–08, he was a top player. He scored about 23.7 points per game. He also got 7.7 rebounds, 7.5 assists, and 3.8 steals per game.

He was named to the Lexington All-City team. His team, the Defenders, had a great record of 30 wins and only 3 losses.

College Career

Freshman Year (2008–09)

At Butler, Mack started every game in his first year. He played in 32 games. He tied a Butler record for most games started by a freshman. His teammates Ronald Nored and Gordon Hayward also shared this record.

He was named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer team. He also made the Horizon League All-Tournament team. Mack led the Bulldogs in assists that year. He was only the third freshman at Butler to get 100 assists. On average, he scored 11.9 points and had 3.5 assists per game.

During the summer, Mack helped Team USA win a gold medal. This was at the 2009 FIBA Under-19 World Championship. He averaged 5.9 points per game in that tournament.

Sophomore Year (2009–10)

In his second year, Mack continued to excel. He was named to the All-Horizon League first team. He also made the NABC All-District 12 first team. He was again on the Horizon League All-Tournament team.

Mack helped lead Butler to the 2010 National Championship game. They played against Duke. In a very close game, Gordon Hayward just missed a shot at the end that would have won the championship for Butler. Mack played in all 38 games, starting every one. He averaged 14.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game.

Junior Year (2010–11)

In his junior year, Mack was named to the All-Horizon League second team. He also made the NABC All-District 12 second team. He became one of only 33 Butler players to score 1,000 points in his college career.

He played in 38 games, starting 37 of them. He averaged 16.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game. On April 21, 2011, he decided to enter the NBA draft. This meant he gave up his final year of college.

Professional Career

Early NBA Years (2011–2013)

On June 23, 2011, the Washington Wizards picked Shelvin Mack. He was the 34th overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft. He signed with the Wizards in December 2011. In February 2012, he scored 12 points against the Orlando Magic.

The Wizards later waived him in October 2012. He then played for the Maine Red Claws in the NBA Development League. He had a few short returns to the Wizards and also played briefly for the Philadelphia 76ers in January 2013.

Atlanta Hawks (2013–2016)

On March 6, 2013, Mack signed a contract with the Atlanta Hawks. He later signed a two-year deal with them. In July 2013, he played for the Hawks in the NBA Summer League.

He had a strong season in 2013–14. He played 73 games and averaged 7.5 points per game. On August 22, 2014, Mack re-signed with the Hawks for three years. In December 2014, he scored a career-high 24 points. He made 6 out of 6 three-pointers in a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Utah Jazz (2016–2017)

On February 18, 2016, Mack was traded to the Utah Jazz. This move brought him back together with his former Butler teammate Gordon Hayward. He also reunited with his former Hawks assistant coach, Quin Snyder.

Mack played his first game for the Jazz on February 21. He scored 16 points and had six assists. In the next game, he became the starting point guard. On March 11, he scored a new career-high of 27 points against the Washington Wizards. In December 2016, he scored a season-high 19 points.

Later NBA Teams (2017–2019)

On July 9, 2017, Mack signed with the Orlando Magic. During the 2017-18 NBA season, he led the Magic in assists. He averaged 3.9 assists per game. He was waived by the Magic in June 2018.

On August 7, 2018, Mack signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. In February 2019, he was traded back to the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks waived him the next day. On February 10, 2019, the Charlotte Hornets claimed him.

International Career (2019–2021)

After his time in the NBA, Mack played basketball overseas.

  • From 2019 to 2020, he played for Olimpia Milano in Italy.
  • In January 2020, he joined Hapoel Jerusalem in Israel. He helped them win the Israeli State Cup in 2020.
  • From 2020 to 2021, he played for Panathinaikos in Greece. He won the Greek League and the Greek Cup with them in 2021.

Broadcasting Career

In March 2022, Shelvin Mack started working in broadcasting. He covered the 2022 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. He is now an analyst for the CBS Sports show Inside College Basketball.

Personal Life

Shelvin Mack's parents are Shelvin Mack Sr. and Victoria Guy. He has two sisters named Sierra and Keionna.
