Shenandoah (Miami) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Shenandoah is a historic neighborhood located in the city of Miami, Florida. It was one of the first neighborhoods to be built in Miami, starting in 1919. The name "Shenandoah" comes from developers who moved here from Virginia, a state known for its beautiful Shenandoah Valley.

Before it became a neighborhood, the Shenandoah area was mostly farmland and pine forests. In the 1920s, Miami experienced a big building boom. Many new homes and communities were built, and several of these new areas were named "Shenandoah" as part of their title.

Today, the Shenandoah neighborhood has clear boundaries. To the north, you'll find Calle Ocho, a famous street. To the south is Coral Way. The eastern border is SW 12th Avenue, and the western border is SW 27th Avenue.

Shenandoah is also known for its unique buildings. Many homes and places, like Shenandoah Middle School, feature "revivalist architecture." This means they are designed to look like older styles from the past, bringing a classic feel to the neighborhood.
