Shenandoah Junction is a small community in Jefferson County, West Virginia. It is called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it is an area that the government counts for the census, but it is not officially a city or town.
In 2010, about 703 people lived in Shenandoah Junction. It is located between two other towns, Kearneysville and Charles Town, near West Virginia State Route 9.
Shenandoah Junction is home to Jefferson High School. It also has the Peter Burr House, which was built around 1751. This is the oldest wooden house still standing in West Virginia. The land where Shenandoah Junction is located was once given to Lewis Neil by Lord Fairfax. The community was first called Neil's. Its name was changed to Shenandoah Junction in 1881.
Railroad History and Importance
The community grew a lot because of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. This railroad arrived in the 1830s. The name "Shenandoah Junction" comes from where two important railroads meet. These were the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) and the Norfolk and Western Railway.
Today, two different train lines cross paths here. These are the Norfolk Southern Hagerstown Line and the CSX Cumberland Subdivision lines. This makes Shenandoah Junction an important spot for trains.
