Shepard Settlement was a small farming community, known as a hamlet, in Onondaga County, New York. It was located in the northeastern part of the Town of Skaneateles.

Discovering Shepard Settlement's Past

Shepard Settlement got its name from the first families who moved there. It was the second community ever started in the Town of Skaneateles. The very first community was the Village of Skaneateles, found at the top of Skaneateles Lake. Other important early families in the Shepard Settlement area included the Chapmans, Bishops, Horsingtons, and Hares.

Where Was This Hamlet Located?

The settlement was built along Stump Road. This road runs between Hoyt and Foster Roads on one side and Shepard Road on the other. Its center was roughly where Chapman Road meets Stump Road. Shepard Settlement was about 2.6 miles west-northwest of the Village of Marcellus. It was also four miles northeast of Skaneateles.

What Remains of the Community Today?

Over time, the small-town features of Shepard Settlement disappeared. Things like a church and a general store are no longer there. The only thing left that shows the community's history is the Shepard Settlement Cemetery. This cemetery is found at the corner of Stump and Foster Roads.

The Shepard Settlement Cemetery is an important historical site. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. This list includes places in the United States that are important to history or architecture.
