The Sheppard-Worlock Statue is a special monument located in Liverpool, England. It honors two important religious leaders who helped the city: David Sheppard, who was the Anglican Bishop of Liverpool, and Derek Worlock, who was the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool. This statue was created by the artist Stephen Broadbent.
Why This Statue Was Made
The idea for this statue came about in 2005. The Liverpool Echo newspaper asked for it to be built. People in Liverpool helped pay for it. The goal was to remember the important work of Bishop David Sheppard and Archbishop Derek Worlock.
These two leaders were very important in Liverpool during tough times. This was in the 1970s and 1980s. Liverpool had some big problems back then. The city also had a history of people from different churches not always getting along. But Bishop David and Archbishop Derek worked together. They also worked with other religious leaders. They helped unite people and bring peace to the city.
About the Statue's Design
Sculptor Stephen Broadbent created the winning design for the statue. It features two large "doors" made of bronze. Each door is 15 feet tall. These doors are decorated with symbols and newspaper headlines. These images show parts of the two men's lives and their work.
When you look through the open doors, you can see both of Liverpool's main cathedrals. This design shows the unity that the two church leaders worked so hard to achieve. People in Liverpool affectionately called them "fish and chips." This was because they were always together and often in the news. The city council has now accepted the statue. It is a gift to the people of Liverpool.
The Unveiling Event
On Sunday, May 11, church leaders from many Christian groups led a special event. Up to 3,000 Christians walked through Liverpool. This event was called a "Walk of Witness." They started at the Metropolitan Cathedral and walked to Liverpool Cathedral.
Halfway between the two cathedrals, on Hope Street, they stopped. Here, they unveiled the 15-foot bronze statue. It honored the work of Bishop David Sheppard and Archbishop Derek Worlock. During the walk, they took turns reading a special prayer. This prayer thanked God for people who inspire hope. It also thanked Bishop David and Archbishop Derek for their friendship and courage. The prayer reminded everyone to continue their good work.
