Who Was Raja Sher Singh Attariwala?
Raja Sher Singh Attariwala was a brave and respected leader. His father was General Chattar Singh Attariwalla. Sher Singh became famous for leading the Sikh army, known as the Khalsa army.
Leading the Khalsa Army
Sher Singh led the Khalsa army during the Second Anglo-Sikh War. This war was fought against the British East India Company. He was a very skilled commander.
The Battle of Chillianwala
One of the most important battles Sher Singh fought was the Battle of Chillianwala. In this battle, the Sikh Khalsa Army, led by Sher Singh, fought against the British army. The Sikhs managed to defend their position very well.
Both sides said they won the battle. However, it became clear later that the Sikhs had defeated the British. This battle was one of the toughest the British Army had ever faced.
Life After the War
After the British took control of Punjab, Sher Singh Attariwalla was sent away from his homeland. The British were worried that such a strong leader might start another war.
Sher Singh died in 1858 while he was in exile in Benares, far from Punjab.
