The community of Sherard is named after the Sherard family. They were the first to clear the land here in 1874 to start a large farm called a plantation.

Sherard was an important stop on the old Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad. By 1910, the community had four general stores where people could buy everyday items. There was also a company called Memphis Shingle Company. A post office opened in Sherard in 1890, helping people send and receive mail.
