College Basketball Days
Sherman played college basketball at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) from 1994 to 1997. He was part of the VCU Rams team. During his three years there, he scored a total of 881 points. He was also known for his great passing, ranking fifth in VCU's history for career assists. He averaged 4.6 assists per game. In the 1995-96 season, he was chosen for the Colonial Athletic Association Second Team.
Playing Professionally Overseas
After college, Sherman played for different professional teams around the world.
- In 1997–98, he played two games for Tapiolan Honka in Finland.
- The next season (1998–99), he played 41 games for Honka, averaging 16.4 points. His team finished second in the Finnish league.
- In 1999, he played briefly in Argentina for Belgrano de San Nicolás.
- In 2001, he joined SSV Ratiopharm Ulm in Germany. He played 16 games, averaging 15.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.7 assists. He once scored 29 points in a game for Ulm.

Representing Team Canada
Sherman Hamilton was a very important player for the Canadian men's national basketball team.
