Island History and People
Sherose Island has a long and interesting past. It was once home to Acadian families. These families lived there until April 1756. At that time, many Acadians were forced to leave their homes.
Military Families on the Island
From the 1960s to the late 1980s, military families lived on Sherose Island. These were families of people working for the Royal Canadian Air Force. Later, they were part of the Canadian Forces. They were stationed at CFS Barrington. This was an early warning radar station. It was located about 27 kilometers (17 miles) away in Baccaro.
The military families lived in mobile homes. These homes were about 60 feet (18 meters) long and 12 feet (3.7 meters) wide. The base's Commanding Officer had a larger house. It was located at the end of the causeway. At its busiest, more than 100 military families lived on Sherose Island.
Changes Over Time
The number of military homes on the island slowly decreased. This happened throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The radar station, CFS Barrington, was used less and less. Today, you can still see concrete pads on the island. These are the spots where the mobile homes once stood. You might also find remains of old Acadian cellars.
Sherose Island Today
Today, Sherose Island has a small number of people living there. It also has a small wharf. This is a place where boats can dock.
Recreation and Community Life
The main recreation spot is the Sherose Island Recreation Centre. This center has many fun things to do. It includes a curling rink and an arena. There is also an outdoor swimming pool. A ball field is available for sports. The local government's recreation department is also located here. Sherose Island is also home to the local Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
