Shevrin D. Jones (born October 12, 1983) is an American educator and politician. He was elected to the Florida State Senate in 2020. He represents the 34th District. Before this, he was a member of the Florida House of Representatives. He represented the 101st District from 2012 to 2020. This district included parts of Broward County.
Shevrin Jones is the first Black person elected to the Florida Senate who is openly part of the LGBT community. He could not run for his House seat again due to term limits. So, he ran for the Florida Senate in 2020.
About Shevrin Jones's Life
Shevrin Jones was born in Miami Gardens, Florida. He went to Florida A&M University. In 2006, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. This degree was in biochemistry and molecular biology.
After college, he returned to South Florida. He taught Advanced Placement Chemistry in public schools. He also taught Biology at Florida Atlantic University High School. In 2017, he earned a Master of Education degree. In 2022, he received a PhD in Educational Leadership. Both degrees were from Florida Atlantic University.
In 2016, Jones had a serious injury. It affected his lower spine and ability to walk. Doctors thought he might be paralyzed. After surgery and therapy, he was able to walk again. He used a cane for seven weeks.
Serving in the Florida House of Representatives
In 2012, new districts were drawn for the Florida House of Representatives. Jones decided to run in the new 101st District. This area included cities like Hollywood and Miramar.
He ran without anyone opposing him in both the primary and general elections. This means he won his first election easily. He was re-elected every two years without opposition until 2020. He then ran for the Florida Senate because of term limits.
From 2012 to 2020, Jones worked in the Florida House. He supported laws that helped incarcerated women. He also helped expand a clean syringe exchange program. He worked on safety rules for youth athletic coaches. He also pushed for police body cameras across the state. Jones was the Democratic Deputy Whip from 2014 to 2018.
Serving in the Florida Senate
In 2020, Shevrin Jones ran for the Florida Senate. He wanted to represent District 35. This district covers parts of Miami-Dade and Broward counties. He ran to replace Oscar Braynon, who could not run again.
Jones won the primary election against six other candidates. He won by a large margin. He beat several experienced politicians. He also raised more money than all his opponents combined.
In July 2020, Jones and his family got sick with COVID-19. He spoke on news channels about the state's response to the pandemic. He also talked about the state's contact tracing program.
Florida Senate District 35 includes cities like Miami Gardens and Miramar. In June 2022, Shevrin Jones qualified to run in a new district. This was Senate District 34. It is a district that usually votes for Democrats. It covers parts of Hialeah, Miami, and Miami Beach. It also includes Miami Gardens and North Miami.
