History of Shindler
The community of Shindler got its name from Charles Shindler. He was one of the first people to settle in this area.
Geography and Location
Shindler is located in the northeastern part of Lincoln County. It is about 8 miles (13 km) southeast of Sioux Falls, which is a larger city nearby. You can find Shindler along South Dakota Highway 11.
The community is also about 15 miles (24 km) north of Canton. Canton is the main town and county seat for Lincoln County. The Big Sioux River is just 3 miles (5 km) to the west of Shindler. This river forms the border between South Dakota and Iowa.
Shindler covers an area of about 1.5 square miles (3.9 square kilometers). All of this area is land. A small stream called Spring Creek flows eastward through the southern part of Shindler. This creek eventually flows into the Big Sioux River.
