Land Claim History

There is an ongoing discussion about who truly owns the land in Shinnecock Hills. The Shinnecock Indian Nation believes this land belongs to them. They say it was taken unfairly in 1859.

The Lawsuit from 2005

In 2005, the Shinnecock Indian Nation started a lawsuit against the state. They asked for the return of about 3,500 acres (1,400 hectares) of land in Southampton. This land is near their tribal reservation. They also asked for a lot of money as reparations for the past.

The land they are talking about includes the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. The Shinnecock people say that this golf club is built on their tribe's old burial grounds.

Details of the Dispute

The main part of the lawsuit is about an agreement from 1703. This agreement was a 1,000-year lease between the town of Southampton and the Shinnecock tribe. The lawsuit claims that in 1859, a group of powerful investors worked together to break this lease. They supposedly sent a fake request to the state government. This request was said to be from some Shinnecock tribesmen, asking to sell the land.

Even though other tribe members immediately said the request was fake, the government approved the sale. This led to 3,500 acres of land, which used to belong to the tribe, being sold. The town of Southampton has spent a lot of money, over $732,000, on legal fees for this lawsuit.
