When the Film Came Out

Ships with Wings first showed in November 1941. It was then released to everyone in January 1942. The film was very popular and did well in cinemas. It was the second most watched movie in British cinemas that month.

A real event made the film even more interesting at the time. The Ark Royal was a real aircraft carrier where some scenes were filmed. This ship sadly sank in November 1941, just as the movie was coming out. This made the film feel very current and important to people watching it. In the movie, the Ark Royal pretended to be a fictional ship called HMS Invincible. The name HMS Invincible was not used for a real Royal Navy aircraft carrier until the 1970s.
