The Shire of Belmont was a local government area in Queensland, Australia. It was located in the eastern part of Brisbane. This area included the place we now know as Belmont.
History of Belmont Shire
The story of Belmont Shire began with the Bulimba Division. This was one of the first local areas set up in Queensland. It was created on 11 November 1879. At that time, about 2,000 people lived there.
Over the years, the Bulimba Division changed. On 4 January 1888, a part of it became the new Kianawah Division. This area was later called Wynnum Division. Soon after, on 19 January 1888, another part of Bulimba Division became the Balmoral Division.
Later in 1888, on 24 October, the western side of the division also separated. This part formed the Shire of Coorparoo. There were also some small changes to the borders on 17 March 1892.
Finally, on 3 November 1894, the remaining part of the Bulimba Division got a new name. It was officially renamed the Belmont Division.
In 1903, a new law changed how local areas were managed. On 31 March 1903, the Belmont Division officially became the Shire of Belmont.
The people of Belmont Shire wanted a railway to help their area grow. So, the shire decided to build its own railway! This was called the Belmont Tramway. It officially opened on Saturday, 25 May 1912.
However, the Shire of Belmont did not last forever. On 1 October 1925, it joined with other areas. It became part of the larger City of Brisbane.
