Shirley Frimpong-Manso is a talented Ghanaian film director, writer, and producer. She was born on March 16, 1977, in the Kwahu East District of Ghana. She is well-known for starting her own company, Sparrow Productions, which creates movies, TV shows, and advertisements.
Shirley Frimpong-Manso won the award for Best Director at the 6th Africa Movie Academy Awards. She also helps run Sparrow Station, a website where people can watch African movies and shows online. In 2013, she was named one of the most influential people in Ghana.
Shirley wants to make high-quality movies in Ghana and Africa. She aims to tell African stories from an African point of view. She also wanted to change how Ghana was shown in films. Her movies often feature strong female characters who are independent and lead interesting lives. Her movie ‘Potato Potahto’ became available on Netflix in December 2019. She also launched her Sparrow Station YouTube channel in March 2025.

About Shirley Frimpong-Manso
Shirley Frimpong-Manso grew up in Kwahu Pepease in the Eastern Region of Ghana. When she was a child, she loved organizing plays. She found it much more fun than playing with toys.
She finished her studies in 2000 at the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) in Ghana. After graduating, she worked as a presenter at Radio Gold, a radio station in Accra. In 2003, she started her own company, Sparrow Productions. Shirley is married to Ken Attoh, who is also her business partner, and they have a child together.
Shirley Frimpong-Manso's Early Work
After school, Shirley Frimpong-Manso worked with producer and actress Juliet Asante. They helped create the TV show Heart to Heart for two years.
She has also produced other projects, including:
- Different Shades of Blue – a TV series about five university girls living in a dorm.
- Personalities Kitchen – a cooking show where two famous people compete to make a rice dish.
- The Miss Ghana Pageant – during her time, two semifinalists from this pageant reached the Miss World event within five years.

- A Sting In A Tale also won the Audience Favorite-Narrative Feature award at the 18th Annual Pan African Film & Arts Festival.
- At the 2014 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, she won Best Movie Director and Best Video Editor. She also won Best Writer (Drama) with Hertey Owusu. Her film Contract won Best Movie.
- In March 2021, she was named Film Director of the Year at the Citi TV Entertainment Achievement Awards.
