Shirley was born Shirley Cross in St Albans, England. She went to St Anne's College, Oxford University. There, she earned a degree in botany, which is the study of plants. She also completed a D.Phil., which is a high-level university degree, similar to a PhD.

Shirley Sherwood is best known for collecting and writing books about botanical illustrations. These are detailed and accurate drawings of plants. She has helped many people become interested in this beautiful art form again.
In 2008, a special art gallery was opened at Kew Gardens in London. It is called The Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art. This gallery was the first in the world to be completely dedicated to botanical art. It shows many of the amazing plant drawings that Shirley has collected.
