Shively is a small, quiet place in Humboldt County, California. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government. Instead, it's managed by the county.
Shively has had a few different names over time, including Shiveley, Bluff Prairie, and Paradise.
Where is Shively?
Shively is located in northern California. It sits about 2.25 miles (3.6 km) north-northwest of another community called Redcrest. The area is 144 feet (44 meters) above sea level. You can find it right next to the Eel River.
A Look Back at Shively
For many years, Shively was a busy farming area. Just like its neighbor, Pepperwood, Shively was known for growing lots of fresh produce. Farmers here grew crops like corn, cucumbers, and tomatoes.
Shively also had its own post office. It served the community for many years, from 1906 until 1965.
The Big Flood of 1964
In 1964, a very large flood hit the area. This event is often called the Christmas flood of 1964. The Eel River overflowed its banks, causing a lot of damage. Sadly, much of Shively was destroyed by this powerful flood.
After the flood, the community changed a lot. Today, only a few farms and homes remain in Shively.
