Shohei Ono (born February 3, 1992) is a famous Japanese judo athlete who has now retired. He is known as one of the best judo fighters ever.

Ono won two gold medals at the Olympic Games. He also won three World Championships. Plus, he earned five Grand Slam titles. From 2015 onwards, he was the top lightweight judoka. He won almost every major competition he entered. Ono is famous for his powerful techniques like osoto gari and uchimata. He is known for his classic judo style. He often won matches by ippon, which is the highest score in judo.

Shohei Ono's Judo Journey

Becoming a Star: Tokyo Grand Slam 2012

Shohei Ono showed he was a top ippon player at the Grand Slam in Tokyo in 2012. He won all his matches by ippon. This means he defeated his opponents with a perfect throw or hold. In the final, he faced Riki Nakaya, who was a world champion. Ono won with a great osoto gari throw. This victory was a big moment for Ono. It marked the start of a long rivalry between him and Nakaya.

Paris Grand Slam 2013 Performance

Ono continued his winning streak at the Grand Slam in Paris. He won his first few fights by ippon. However, he lost in the semi-final to Tsagaanbaatar. Tsagaanbaatar used Ono's own move, uchi mata, to score. But Ono quickly bounced back. He won the bronze medal match in just eight seconds. He used an uchi mata to get another ippon.

Rising to Fame: 2013 World Championships

Ono became Japan's lightweight champion at the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro. He was the third Japanese lightweight champion in four years. In his first fight, he faced Wang Ki-chun from Korea. Wang was disqualified after getting four penalties. This was a surprising start to the tournament.

Ono then won his next fights. He used his strong techniques like de ashi harai and uchi mata. He also faced Miklós Ungvári, who was also disqualified. In the quarter-final, Ono fought Dex Elmont. Ono won this tough match in "golden score" time. He used a harai goshi throw to win by ippon. This sent him to the semi-final. There, he defeated van Tichelt with his powerful osoto gari.

Winning the World Title

In the final, Ono competed against Ugo Legrand. Ono scored early with an uchi mata. He then won the World title with a strong hane goshi throw. This throw scored an ippon, giving him the victory. Winning the World title was a very emotional moment for him.

Ono also helped Japan win a bronze medal in the Teams' event. He continued to show his strong ippon style. He defeated Mirali Sharipov with an osoto gari and an uchi mata.

2016 Olympic Games Success

Shohei Ono competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He won the gold medal in the men's 73 kg category. This was a huge achievement for him. He wanted to show that his unique "Ono style" of judo was the best.

2020 Olympic Games Victory

Ono continued his Olympic success at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. These games were held in 2021 due to the pandemic. He again won the gold medal in the 73 kg competition. In the final match, he defeated Lasha Shavdatuashvili from Georgia. The fight went into "Golden Score" time before Ono secured the win. He also won a silver medal as part of the mixed team event.
