Shohei Ono (大野将平, Ōno Shōhei, born 3 February 1992) is a Japanese retired judoka.

Shohei Ono is known as one of the best judo fighters ever. He has won two Olympic gold medals and three World Championships. He also won five Grand Slams, which are major judo tournaments. From 2015 onwards, he was the top lightweight judoka, winning almost every big competition he entered. Ono is famous for his classic judo moves like osoto gari and uchimata. He is also known for his "all ippon" style, meaning he often wins by throwing his opponent cleanly.

Shohei Ono's Judo Journey

Shohei Ono started making a name for himself in judo at a young age. He quickly became known for his exciting style. He always aimed to win matches with an ippon, which is the highest score in judo. An ippon means a clean, strong throw that ends the match right away.

Early Career Highlights

Grand Slam Tokyo 2012

In 2012, Ono showed everyone he was a rising star at the Grand Slam in Tokyo. He won all his matches by ippon, which is very impressive. In the final, he faced Riki Nakaya, who was the world champion at the time. Ono defeated Nakaya with a fantastic osoto gari throw. This win was a big moment, as it marked the start of Ono's dominance in the lightweight division.

Grand Slam Paris 2013

Ono continued his winning streak at the Grand Slam in Paris. He won his early matches with more ippon throws. However, he lost in the semi-final to Tsagaanbaatar. Even so, Ono quickly bounced back. He won the bronze medal match in just eight seconds with an uchi mata ippon. This showed his determination and powerful fighting style.

Becoming a World Champion

2013 World Championships

In 2013, Shohei Ono became a world champion in Rio de Janeiro. He was the third Japanese lightweight champion in just four years. His journey to the gold medal was exciting. He faced tough opponents, including Korea's double World Champion Wang Ki-chun. Ono won many of his matches by ippon or by getting his opponents disqualified.

In the semi-final, he defeated Dirk Van Tichelt with a strong osoto gari throw. This secured his spot in the final.

Winning the Final

In the final match, Ono competed against Ugo Legrand. Ono scored early with an uchi mata. He then won the World title with a powerful hane goshi throw, which scored an ippon. Winning this championship was a huge achievement for him, and he was very emotional. Ono also helped Japan win a bronze medal in the Teams' event at the same championships.

Olympic Gold Medals

Rio 2016 Olympics

Shohei Ono achieved his dream of winning an Olympic gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He was incredibly proud to show his unique "Ono style" of judo to the world. He believed his style was the strongest, and he proved it by winning gold.

Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Ono continued his Olympic success at the 2020 Olympics held in his home country, Japan. He won another gold medal in the 73 kg category. In a very close final match, he defeated Lasha Shavdatuashvili from Georgia in "Golden Score" overtime. This second Olympic gold medal cemented his place as a judo legend.
