Early Life and Overcoming Challenges
Shon Coleman was born in Memphis, Tennessee. He grew up and went to Olive Branch High School in Olive Branch, Mississippi. In high school, Shon was a top football player. Experts like Rivals.com said he was the best player in Mississippi. He was also ranked as the 3rd best offensive lineman in the entire country during his senior year.
Shon played in important games like the US Army All-American Game. He received more than 30 scholarship offers from many big colleges. He chose to play college football at Auburn University and signed with them in February 2010.
Just a few weeks after committing to Auburn, Shon received some very tough news. He was diagnosed with leukemia, a type of cancer. Shon bravely fought and beat leukemia. This amazing comeback showed his strength and determination. Later, in 2014, he even got to announce a pick in the 2014 NFL draft.
College Football Journey
Because he was getting treatment for leukemia, Shon did not play football during his first two years at Auburn (2011 and 2012). After beating the illness, he finally got to play in 2013. He started as a backup left tackle. That year, Shon helped Auburn win the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Championship. They even made it to the 2014 BCS National Championship game.
In 2014, which was his sophomore year, Shon became a starter for the first time. He played very well. During his junior year in 2015, he continued to shine. He was named Second-team All-SEC, which means he was one of the best offensive linemen in his conference. After his successful junior year, Shon decided to enter the 2016 NFL draft.
Shon also focused on his education. After the 2015 football season, he earned his Master's Degree in Adult Education from Auburn.
Becoming a Professional Football Player
Joining the NFL
Before the 2016 NFL draft, football experts thought Shon Coleman would be picked early. Some even predicted he might go in the first or second round. He was considered one of the top offensive linemen available. Shon was invited to the NFL Scouting Combine. This is where college players show off their skills to NFL teams.
Shon was still recovering from a knee injury from 2015. Because of this, he couldn't do all the drills at the Combine. He only did the bench press, where he lifted weights 22 times. Later, he attended Auburn's "Pro Day." This is another event where players can show their skills to scouts from all NFL teams.
Scouts liked Shon's upper body strength, long arms, and ability to block. They also liked that he could play both tackle positions. Some concerns were his past medical history and his age.
Playing for the Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns picked Shon Coleman in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft. He was the 76th player chosen overall. In June, he signed a four-year contract with the team.
Shon missed some early practices because of his knee injury. He joined the team for practice in July. He started his first season as a backup player. In 2017, Shon earned a starting spot. He started all 16 games that season as the team's right tackle.

On August 31, 2018, Shon was traded to the San Francisco 49ers.
In 2019, Shon faced another challenge. He hurt his ankle during a preseason game. He needed surgery for a dislocated ankle and a broken bone. This injury meant he couldn't play for the rest of the 2019 season. Even without Shon, the 49ers had a great season and made it to Super Bowl LIV. However, they lost the game to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Shon signed another one-year contract with the 49ers in March 2020. But in August 2020, he decided not to play that season. He chose to opt out because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, Shon was placed on injured reserve and later released by the team.
