Offensive tackle facts for kids
An offensive tackle (often called an OT or T) is a key player in American football and Canadian football. They are part of the offensive line, a group of players whose main job is to protect their teammates. Offensive tackles work to stop defensive players from reaching the player who has the football. This protection is super important for the team to gain yards and score points.

What Do Offensive Tackles Do?
Offensive tackles have a big responsibility on the field. Their main job is to block the opposing team's defense. They protect the quarterback when he is trying to throw the ball. They also open up paths for the running back to run through.
Protecting the Quarterback
When the quarterback drops back to pass, offensive tackles form a "pocket" around him. They stand on the outside edges of the offensive line. Their strong blocking helps keep defensive players away from the quarterback. This gives the quarterback enough time to find an open receiver and throw the ball. If the tackles don't block well, the quarterback might get tackled before he can throw. This is called a "sack."
Opening Running Lanes
Offensive tackles also play a big role in running plays. They block defensive players to create open spaces, or "lanes," for the running back. The running back can then run through these lanes to gain yards. Good blocking from the tackles helps the team move the ball down the field.
Where Do They Play?
There are two offensive tackles on the field during a play. One is called the "left tackle" and the other is the "right tackle." They stand on either side of the offensive guards. The left tackle often protects the quarterback's "blind side." This is the side the quarterback cannot easily see when he is throwing. Because of this, the left tackle is often one of the most important players on the offensive line.
Skills Needed to Be a Tackle
To be a great offensive tackle, players need a special mix of skills.
- Strength: They need to be very strong to push back big defensive players.
- Size: Tackles are usually some of the tallest and heaviest players on the team. This helps them stand their ground.
- Agility: Even though they are big, they need to be quick on their feet. They must react fast to defensive moves.
- Technique: Knowing how to block correctly is key. This includes footwork, hand placement, and body position.
- Intelligence: They must understand the plays and know what the defense is trying to do.
Famous Offensive Tackles
Many great players have been offensive tackles. They often don't get as much attention as quarterbacks or running backs. But their work is essential for the team's success. One well-known tackle is Bryant McKinnie, who played for teams like the Minnesota Vikings. His strong blocking helped his team's offense.
