Punter facts for kids
A punter (often called a P) is a special player in American football and Canadian football. Their main job is to kick the ball far down the field to the other team. Punters are a key part of a group of players called the "special teams."
What Does a Punter Do?
A punter's main role is to kick the ball away when their team can't get a first down. In American football, this usually happens on the fourth down. In Canadian football, it's often on the third down. The goal is to kick the ball as far as possible. This makes it harder for the other team to score because they start their turn farther from the end zone.
Kicking the Ball
When a punter kicks, the ball is snapped (thrown) to them from the center of the field. The punter then drops the ball and kicks it before it hits the ground. This kick is called a "punt." A good punt can change where the game is played on the field, giving their team a better chance to win.
Special Teams Role
Punters are part of the "special teams." These are groups of players who only come onto the field for specific plays, like kicks. Other special teams players include placekickers (who kick field goals and extra points) and kick returners.
Fake Punts
Sometimes, a punter might try a tricky play called a "fake punt." Instead of kicking the ball, they might run with it or throw it to another player. This is a surprise move meant to trick the other team and try to get a first down. It's a risky play, but it can be very exciting if it works!
Filling In
Punters are skilled kickers. Because of this, they can sometimes help out as a placekicker if needed. This usually only happens if the main placekicker gets hurt during a game.
