A Look Inside Spirit Mountain Cave

Spirit Mountain Cave is a fascinating underground world. It is found high up on Cedar Mountain. This is about 4 miles (6.4 km) from the town of Cody, Wyoming. The cave is located on the south side of the Shoshone River.

Exploring the Cavern

The main part of the cave goes deep into the mountain. It stretches for about 2,500 feet (762 meters). Imagine walking that far underground! The cave walls are covered with beautiful crystals. There are also dripping rock formations. Most of these are white. But some have brownish or reddish colors. They make the cave look like a sparkling, hidden treasure.

From Monument to Cave

The area was first protected as Shoshone Cavern National Monument. This happened in 1909. A "national monument" is a place protected by the government. It saves important natural or historic sites.

Changes Over Time

On March 17, 1954, the U.S. Congress made a big change. They decided to "abolish" the monument. This means they officially ended its status as a national monument. The 210-acre (0.85 km2) site was then given to the city of Cody, Wyoming.

Spirit Mountain Cave Today

As of 2008, the cave is owned by the Bureau of Land Management. It is now called Spirit Mountain Cave. If you want to visit this cool cave, you need a special permit. You can get a permit by contacting the Bureau of Land Management office in Cody, Wyoming.
