The Story of Showmars
How It All Started
George Couchell was the person who started Showmars. He was a first-generation Greek immigrant. This means his parents or grandparents came from Greece. George went to Duke University. He also served as an officer in the United States Navy.
George began working in restaurants early on. He worked at Johnny's Grill. This was a restaurant in Charlotte owned by his parents. In 1968, George opened his own fried chicken restaurant. It was called Mr. C's and was also in Charlotte.
The first Showmars restaurant opened in 1982. It was located in Monroe. The chain got its name from an employee at Mr. C's. His name was Showmar.
Most Showmars restaurants are in the Charlotte area. But the chain has grown. You can find Showmars as far south as Lexington. They are also north in the Research Triangle area.
