Shrek Retold is a special version of the 2001 movie Shrek. It was made by many fans working together. This fan-made film came out on YouTube on November 29, 2018. A YouTuber named Grant Duffrin, also known as "3GI," led this big project. More than 200 different creators helped make the film. Each person or group made a small part of the movie.

How Shrek Retold Is Made

Shrek Retold follows the same story as the original Shrek movie. There are only a few small changes to the plot. The biggest difference is how each part of the movie looks and sounds. Since over 200 creators worked on it, the art style, voices, and music change often. These changes are usually very different from the original movie.

The first Shrek movie was made completely with 3D animation. But Shrek Retold uses many different ways to animate. It has 2D and 3D animation. It also includes live action scenes, where real people act. Some parts even use stop motion, which is like moving objects frame by frame. Many well-known internet personalities and actors helped create the film. These include David Liebe Hart, Michael Cusack, Ratboy Genius, Anthony Fantano, Noah Munck, KC Green, Jamie Loftus, Doug Lussenhop, and SiIvaGunner.

Making and Releasing the Film

Shrek Retold was a team effort, but each creator worked on their part alone. Grant Duffrin, the director, divided the original movie into many scenes. Then, each scene was given to a different creator to remake.

In an interview, Duffrin explained his real love for Shrek. He said it was not like the "ironic" Shrek internet memes that were popular then. Before the film was released, a preview video was put on the 3GI YouTube channel. Many news websites talked about this preview.

The full Shrek Retold movie was first shown live on YouTube on November 29, 2018. It is still available to watch on the site today. One year later, on November 29, 2019, 3GI announced something new. Fans could buy the film on VHS tapes or download it for free. In March 2020, another fan-made movie came out. It was called Sonic Rebuilt, and it was a similar remake of the 1999 Sonic the Hedgehog film.
