Type Estuary

The Shrewsbury River is a short waterway in New Jersey, United States. It's about 8 miles (13 km) long. This river is special because it's an estuary. An estuary is a place where fresh water from a river mixes with salty ocean water. This mix creates a unique environment for many plants and animals.

The Shrewsbury River is also "navigable," meaning boats can easily travel on it. It starts near Oceanport and flows northeast. It then joins another estuary called the Navesink River. From there, it flows into Sandy Hook Bay, which connects to the Atlantic Ocean.

A long, narrow strip of land, called a barrier peninsula, protects the river from the open ocean. This peninsula includes popular Jersey Shore towns like Monmouth Beach and Sea Bright. On the other side of the river, you'll find towns like Rumson.

The Shrewsbury River is a popular spot for fun activities. Many people enjoy boating and recreational fishing here. You can find different types of fish, such as fluke (also known as summer flounder), striped bass, bluefish, and weakfish. These are all popular catches for local anglers, which is another word for people who fish.
