How Siberia Got Its Name
The community of Siberia was officially planned out in 1869. When a town is "platted," it means its streets and land lots are drawn on a map. This helps people know where to build homes and businesses.
There's a fun legend about how Siberia got its name. The people who planned the town wanted to call it "Sabaria." This name was chosen because it was the birthplace of Saint Martin of Tours, a famous historical figure.
However, when the paperwork went to the Post Office Department, something interesting happened. An employee there thought "Sabaria" was a mistake. They believed the planners meant to write "Siberia," like the huge, cold region in Russia. So, the name "Siberia" was officially given to the community, and it stuck!
The Old Post Office
A post office was opened in Siberia in 1883. This was an important place for people to send and receive letters and packages. It served the community for many years. However, the post office eventually closed down in 1983.
