History of Sibley
Sibley was started in 1869. It was named after a nearby body of water called Lake Sibley. When it was first founded, people hoped it would become an important place.
Becoming a County Seat
In 1870, Sibley was considered to be the "county seat" for Cloud County. A county seat is the main town in a county. It is where the local government offices are located. Sibley competed against Concordia for this important title.
Why Sibley is a Ghost Town
Sibley lost the election to Concordia in 1870. Because it did not become the county seat, the town did not grow much. Over time, people moved away. Today, the land where Sibley once stood is privately owned. It is mainly used for farming. This is why Sibley is now known as a ghost town.
