Sid Jacobson was an American writer born on October 20, 1929. He was well-known for his work on children's comic books. Sid also wrote popular music, stories, and biographies. He was a managing editor and editor-in-chief at Harvey Comics. Later in his career, Sid Jacobson created important non-fiction graphic novels with artist Ernie Colón. These included The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation and Anne Frank: The Anne Frank House Authorized Graphic Biography.

Sid Jacobson's Early Life and Career

Sid Jacobson grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He went to Abraham Lincoln High School. Then, he studied journalism at New York University. His first jobs were at newspapers in New York City.

Writing Songs and Comics

In the 1950s and 1960s, Sid worked at Harvey Comics. While there, he wrote songs for famous singers. These included Frankie Avalon and Johnny Mathis. It's amazing because Sid couldn't even read music! At Harvey, he met artist Ernie Colón. Sid edited Ernie's artwork for many years.

Working at Marvel Comics

After his time at Harvey, Sid Jacobson became an executive editor at Marvel Comics. He helped start a special line of comics for kids called Star Comics. Sid edited all the Star Comics titles. He also wrote stories for some of them, like Wally the Wizard and Top Dog. He even wrote comic book versions of movies. These included Labyrinth and Santa Claus: The Movie.

Writing Books

During this time, Sid Jacobson also wrote a novel. It was called Streets of Gold. This book told a fictional story about his family. It was about their journey from Russia to the United States. Later, he wrote a book about baseball player Pete Reiser.

Graphic Novels and Later Works

In the early 1990s, Sid Jacobson went back to Harvey Comics. He helped create new comics based on Hanna-Barbera cartoon characters.

Teaming Up with Ernie Colón

In 2006, Sid Jacobson worked with his old friend Ernie Colón again. Sid wrote and Ernie drew a graphic novel version of the 9/11 Commission Report. It was called The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation. This book helped explain a very important event in history.

They worked together on more graphic novels. In 2008, they released After 9/11: America's War on Terror. They also created A Graphic Biography: Che in 2009. Their book Anne Frank: The Anne Frank House Authorized Graphic Biography came out in 2010. These graphic novels helped make complex topics easier to understand.

Personal Life

Sid Jacobson had two children, Seth and Kathy. He lived in Los Angeles.

Awards and Recognition

Sid Jacobson received an Inkpot Award in 2003. This award honors people who have made great contributions to comics.
