Sidymella is a group of fascinating spiders. They belong to the family called Thomisidae, also known as crab spiders. You can find these spiders in different parts of the world, including South America, Australia, and New Zealand.
These spiders were first given the name Sidyma. However, scientists later found that this name was already being used for a type of moth. So, the spider group was renamed Sidymella.
How Spiders Get Their Names
Scientists use a system called taxonomy to name and group all living things. This helps them organize and understand the natural world. In 1895, a scientist named Eugène Simon first described this group of spiders. He called them Sidyma.
But there was a problem! Another scientist had already used the name Sidyma in 1856 for a group of moths. When a name is already taken, it's called "preoccupied." To fix this, in 1942, another scientist named Strand gave the spiders a new, unique name: Sidymella.
Different Types of Sidymella Spiders
Within the Sidymella group, there are many different kinds of spiders. Each kind is called a species. As of April 2016, the World Spider Catalog recognized many species of Sidymella spiders. They are found in various locations around the world.
