Sierra Island (62°24′S 59°48′W / 62.400°S 59.800°W) is a small, narrow island located in Antarctica. It is part of the South Shetland Islands. The island has several small hills along its length.
About Sierra Island
Sierra Island is about 0.5 miles (0.8 kilometers) long. It lies northwest of Dee Island. It is also north of Greenwich Island. The island covers an area of about 14 hectares (35 acres).
How Sierra Island Got Its Name
The island was named by the 5th Chilean Antarctic Expedition. This expedition took place between 1950 and 1951. It was named after Sergeant Victor Sierra. He was a sick-bay attendant on the patrol ship Lientur. This ship was part of the expedition.
