Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan (Urdu: سردار سِکندر حیات خان) (born June 1, 1934 – died October 9, 2021) was an important political leader. He served as the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) two times. He was also the President of AJK two times. He holds the record for being the longest-serving Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

His Early Life and School Days
Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan was born into a well-known political family in Kashmir. His father, Nawab Muhammad Hayat Khan, was famous for leading a big protest. This protest was against unfair taxes set by the local rulers in 1931. His father specifically led a protest against a tax on salt.
Sikandar Hayat Khan started his schooling in his home village of Karela. This village is now in District Kotli. He also went to school in Poonch city. Later, he studied at Gordon College (Rawalpindi) and finished in 1956. He then went to the University Law College in Lahore. There, he earned a law degree in 1958.
Starting His Political Journey
After finishing his studies, Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan officially joined a political group. This group was called the All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference. He ran for a position in the Kotli council. He won and served in this role for eight years. During this time, he was also chosen to lead the Bar Association in Kotli. This is a group for lawyers.
In 1970, he was elected to the Azad Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly. This is like the parliament for Azad Kashmir. In 1972, he became the Revenue Minister. This means he was in charge of collecting money for the government.
Leading Azad Jammu and Kashmir
Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan was very popular in his home area. He won almost every election from his constituency between 1970 and 2001. The only times he didn't run were when he was serving as the President of Azad Kashmir. During those times, his brother, Sardar Muhammad Naeem Khan, served in the assembly from their area.
Becoming Prime Minister and President
From 1976 to 1978, he served as the acting leader of the Jammu & Kashmir Muslim Conference. In 1978, he was officially elected as its President. He held this important position until 1988.
In 1985, he was elected as the Prime Minister of AJK for the first time. He served in this role until 1990. After that, he led the opposition group in the Assembly until 1991. In 1991, he was elected as the President of AJK. He served a five-year term as President.
On July 25, 2001, he became the Prime Minister of AJK for a second time. He served another five-year term until 2006.
Later Years in Politics
Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan first decided to retire from politics in July 2006. However, he later played a big part in bringing another political party, the Pakistan Muslim League (N), to AJK. Because of his efforts, he was given a high position in that party in 2011.
In February 2021, he left the Pakistan Muslim League (N). He then rejoined the Muslim Conference and became its leader again.
His Passing
Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan passed away on October 9, 2021, in his hometown. He was 87 years old and had been unwell for some time.
