Silica, Wisconsin is a small place in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, USA. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of a larger area called the Town of Taycheedah.

Silica is easy to find! It's located right where County Highway QQ and Silica Road meet. If you travel about 1 mile (or 1.6 kilometers) north from the nearby community of St. Peter, you'll arrive in Silica.

Discovering Silica's Past

How Silica Got Its Name

The community of Silica has an interesting name story! It was officially named "Silica" in 1898. The name comes from the word "silica," which is the Latin word for "sand." This makes a lot of sense because the soil in the area is quite sandy.

Before it was called Silica, the community had a different name: "Summit." This name likely referred to its location, perhaps on a high point or "summit" of land.

The Old Post Office

For a few years, from 1898 to 1904, Silica had its very own post office. A post office was a really important part of a community back then. It was where people sent and received letters and packages, connecting them to the rest of the world. Even though the post office closed, the name "Silica" stuck around!
