The YMCA Conference Center
The Silver Bay YMCA Conference & Family Retreat Center is a very important part of this community. It is one of only a few centers like it in the United States. The center started way back in 1900. It has grown a lot since then. Many different groups come here for meetings and retreats.
Historic Buildings to Explore
The YMCA center has many interesting old buildings.
- Hepbron Hall was built in 1901.
- Paine Hall is a large Victorian Mansion from 1895.
- There is a big auditorium built in 1909 that can hold 700 people.
- Helen Hughes Chapel was built in 1921.
- Fisher Gymnasium was built in 1917.
- The Boathouse is also a notable building.
Many of these buildings show off the beautiful Arts & Crafts style of architecture. During the summer, you can even visit a traditional-style Ice Cream Parlor. The Silver Bay YMCA Conference & Family Retreat Center was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This means it is a very important historical site.
Boats and Boy Scouts
Silver Bay is also home to the Hacker Boat Co.. This company is the oldest builder of motorboats in the world. They have been making boats for a very long time.
The Silver Bay YMCA also has a special connection to the Boy Scouts of America. It was the site of the first historic camp for the Boy Scouts. This happened when the organization was founded in 1910.
