Discovering Silver Hill's Past
Silver Hill has a really interesting history, especially because of its mines. People found valuable metals there a long time ago.
Mining for Metals
In 1838, people discovered silver, lead, and zinc in the Silver Hill area. These metals were found at a place called the Washington mine. It was one of the very few silver mines in the entire state of North Carolina.
The company that owned the mine changed its name over time. First, it was called the "Washington Mining Company." Later, it became the "Silver Hill Mining Company." A group of investors from New York largely controlled this company. They also owned the small town where the mine workers and their families lived.
Silver Hill During the Civil War
During the American Civil War, the lead from the Silver Hill mine was very important. It was used to make supplies for the soldiers fighting in the war.
