Simoca is a lively city in the Tucumán Province of Argentina. It is famous for its busy market and two special national festivals. One festival celebrates the feria (fair), and the other celebrates the sulky. A sulky is a small, two-wheeled cart pulled by a horse. People still use sulkies a lot in Simoca, especially on market day, which is Saturday.

Simoca is located about 52 kilometers (32 miles) south of San Miguel de Tucumán. It sits on National Route 157, a road that leads towards Córdoba. Simoca is the main town in the Simoca Department. In 2010, about 8,351 people lived there.

What is Simoca known for?

Simoca is mainly a farming area. It supports the local sugar cane industry and other types of agriculture. The city is especially known for its delicious pork products and its extra-large empanadas. Empanadas are tasty pastries filled with meat or other ingredients, and they are very popular in Tucumán.

The Famous Simoca Market

The market in Simoca is a big deal! It sells many things, including pork and even live pigs. You can also find other foods, clothes, handmade crafts, and traditional snacks and meals. People believe this market has been around since Simoca was founded in the 1600s. It is a central part of the city's culture.

The Sulky Capital

Simoca is often called the 'sulky capital' of Argentina because these carts are so common there. The sulky is not just a way to get around; it's a symbol of the city's traditions.

A Look at Simoca's History

The first people to live in the Simoca area were indigenous groups called the Beliches and the Simocas. These groups were part of the Tonocote and Lule tribes.

Festivals and Traditions

Simoca celebrates its heritage with two important festivals:

  • The first Fiesta de la Feria (Fair Festival) took place in July 1980. This festival celebrates the city's famous market and its long history.
  • The first Festival Nacional del Sulky (National Sulky Festival) was held in 1973. It took place at the Estadio Club Unión Simoca. This festival honors the traditional sulky and its importance to the community.
