Early Life of Simon Fraser
Simon Fraser was born on December 21, 1828. He was the oldest of seven children. His parents were Thomas Alexander Fraser, 12th Lord Lovat and Charlotte Georgina. His mother was the daughter of George William Jerningham.
Simon had three brothers and three sisters. His siblings included Amelia, Frances, Charlotte, Alexander, George, and Henry. Many of his siblings also married into important families or served in the military. For example, his brother Alexander was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Scots Guards.
Simon Fraser's Career and Roles
Simon Fraser became the Lord Lovat in 1875 after his father passed away. He was the 13th Lord Lovat by law. He was also seen by some as the 15th Lord Lovat, following a different historical count. He lived at Beaufort Castle and was the 22nd Chief of the Clan Fraser of Lovat. The Chief is the main leader of a Scottish clan.
He was a Lieutenant colonel in the 2nd Battalion of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders Militia. This was a military role. From 1873 to 1887, he also served as the Lord Lieutenant of Inverness. This was a special representative of the King or Queen in a county. From 1883 to 1887, he was an aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria. This meant he was a personal assistant to the Queen.
Simon Fraser's Family
In 1866, Lord Lovat married Alice Maria Weld-Blundell. She was the fifth daughter of Thomas Weld-Blundell. Simon and Alice had nine children together:
- Simon Thomas Joseph Fraser (1867–1868), who sadly died very young.
- Mary Laura Fraser (1869–1946), who married John Scott. He was the son of the 3rd Earl of Eldon.
- Alice Mary Charlotte Fraser (1870–1958), who married Bernard Constable-Maxwell.
- Simon Joseph Fraser, 14th Lord Lovat (1871–1933), who became the next Lord Lovat. He married Laura Lister.
- Etheldreada Mary Fraser (1872–1949), who married a diplomat named Sir Francis Oswald Lindley.
- Major Hugh Joseph Fraser (1874–1914), who was a soldier in the Scots Guards. He died in World War I.
- Major Alastair Thomas Joseph Fraser (1877–1949), who married Lady Sybil Grimston.
- Margaret Mary Fraser (1881–1972), who married Brigadier-General Archibald Stirling.
- Muriel Mary Rose Fraser (1884–1989), who chose to become a Catholic nun.
Lord Lovat passed away in September 1887 at the age of 58. He died while hunting in Inverness. His son, Simon, became the next Lord Lovat. Lady Blundell lived for many more years, passing away in 1938 at 92 years old.
