Rose Eleanor Arbuthnot-Leslie (born on February 9, 1987) is a Scottish actress. She is famous for playing Gwen Dawson in the TV show Downton Abbey. She also played Ygritte in the popular fantasy series Game of Thrones. Later, she starred as Maia Rindell in The Good Fight and Clare Abshire in The Time Traveler's Wife.

About Rose Leslie's Early Life
Rose Leslie was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. She grew up in a very old family home called Lickleyhead Castle. This castle is in Aberdeenshire and has been in her family for a long time. Rose lived there until she was 10 years old.
Her father, Sebastian Arbuthnot-Leslie, is a leader of a Scottish family group called Clan Leslie. Her mother, Candida Mary Sibyl "Candy" Leslie, is from another famous family, Clan Fraser of Lovat. Rose's family also has connections to important people from history. These include a king of England and a prime minister of New Zealand.
Rose first went to school in Aberdeenshire. When she was 10, her family moved to France for three years. She went to school there at Ermitage International School. After returning to the UK, she attended Millfield, a boarding school, from 2000 to 2005. Then, she studied acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). She learned stage combat and graduated in 2008 with a degree in acting.
Rose Leslie's Acting Career
Rose Leslie started her career by narrating a radio show for BBC Radio. Her first big role on screen was in the TV film New Town in 2009. For this role, she won an award for Best Acting Performance.
In 2010, she played the main character, May, in a play called Bedlam. This play was shown at the famous Globe Theatre. Critics praised her performance, saying she was very touching.
Becoming a Star in TV Shows
Rose became widely known for her role as Gwen Dawson in the TV drama Downton Abbey. She played a housemaid in the first season of the show. While working on Downton Abbey, she also appeared in a couple of episodes of Case Histories.
In 2012, Rose Leslie joined the cast of the hugely popular HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones. She played Ygritte, a brave and wild character. She was in seasons two, three, and four of the show. People loved her performance as Ygritte. Critics said she made the character more interesting than in the books.
While on Game of Thrones, Rose also acted in the film Now Is Good (2012). She appeared in other TV shows like Vera, Utopia, and Blandings.
Later Roles and Projects
From 2014, Rose Leslie starred in the mini-series The Great Fire. She also appeared in the horror film Honeymoon. She then played DS Emma Lane in the BBC detective show Luther, which was well-received. In 2015, she was in the fantasy film The Last Witch Hunter.
In 2015, Rose and actor David Tennant recorded an audiobook version of Carmilla. In 2016, she played Athena in the film Sticky Notes.
In 2016, Rose Leslie was cast in The Good Fight. This was a legal drama and a spin-off from The Good Wife. She played Maia Rindell, a young lawyer whose family gets into financial trouble. The show started in 2017. Rose left the show after its third season in 2019.
In 2017, Rose also lent her voice to a video game called Echo. She voiced the main character, En.

Rose Leslie's Personal Life
Rose Leslie learned to speak French very well when she lived in France as a child. She used to live in Battersea, London, but later moved to north London. She often says she misses her home in Aberdeen, Scotland.
In 2011, Rose started dating Kit Harington. He played Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, who was her character's love interest on the show. They got married on June 23, 2018. In 2020, it was announced that they were expecting a baby. Their son was born in January 2021. In February 2023, Kit Harington shared that they were expecting their second child. Their daughter was born in July 2023.
Interests and Causes
Rose Leslie enjoys being active. She likes running, rock climbing, skiing, archery, and playing tennis. She is also a supporter of the charity Firefly International.
