Thomas Alexander Fraser, 12th Lord Lovat and 1st Baron Lovat (June 17, 1802 – June 28, 1875) was an important Scottish nobleman. He was the 21st Chief of the Clan Fraser of Lovat, a famous Scottish clan. He took on this role after a well-known ancestor, Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat, whose titles were lost for a time but later restored.
Early Life and Family
Thomas Alexander Fraser was born on June 17, 1802. His parents were Amelia Fraser and Alexander Fraser. His father was a Captain in the 1st Dragoon Guards and passed away soon after Thomas was born.
In 1821, when he was 19, Thomas Fraser asked an architect named John Smith to design a large country house called Strichen House.
Important Roles and Titles
In 1815, Thomas Fraser became the 21st Chief of the Clan Fraser. This happened after Archibald Campbell Fraser, who was the previous chief, passed away without any living children. Thomas inherited the Lovat family lands near Beauly in Inverness-shire.
On January 28, 1837, he was given the new title of Baron Lovat. This was a special title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. Later, in 1854, the old titles of the 11th Lord Lovat were officially given back to the family. Because of this, Thomas became the 12th Lord Lovat in the Peerage of Scotland.
Lord Lovat also served as the Lord Lieutenant of Inverness from 1853 to 1873. This was an important role representing the King or Queen in that area. In 1865, he was made a Knight of the Thistle, which is a very high honor in Scotland.
Family Life
On August 6, 1823, Thomas Fraser married Charlotte Georgina Stafford-Jerningham. She was the daughter of George Stafford-Jerningham, 8th Baron Stafford.
Thomas and Charlotte had seven children together: three daughters and four sons. Some of their children included:
- Amelia Charlotte Fraser (1824–1912), who married Charles Scott-Murray.
- Frances Giorgiana Fraser (1826–1899), who married Sir Pyers Mostyn.
- Charlotte Henrietta Fraser (1827–1904), who married Sir Matthew Sausse.
- Simon Fraser, 13th Lord Lovat (1828–1887), who later became the 13th Lord Lovat.
- Alexander Edward Fraser (1831–1885), who was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Scots Guards and fought in the Crimean War.
- George Edward Stafford Fraser (1834–1854), who passed away young.
- Henry Thomas Fraser (1838–1904), who was a Colonel in the 1st Battalion Scots Guards.
Lord Lovat passed away in June 1875 when he was 73 years old. His oldest son, Simon, took over his titles. Lady Lovat passed away the following year in 1876.
Legacy
Lord Lovat is remembered for helping to fully restore the Lovat family's titles and lands. This work had been started by the 11th Lord's son, General Simon Fraser of Lovat. His efforts helped ensure the good standing of the Clan Fraser today.
