Simon I of Montfort (born around 1025 – died September 25, 1087) was an important French nobleman. He was born in a town called Montfort l'Amaury, which is near Paris, France. Simon became the lord (or ruler) of Montfort. His parents were Amaury I de Montfort and Bertrade. When he passed away, Simon was buried about 20 miles away in Épernon. This was because he had helped a lot in building a strong fortress there.
Simon's Family
Simon I de Montfort was married twice and had many children.
First Marriage
Simon's first wife was Isabel de Broyes, who was born in 1034. She was the daughter of a man named Hugh Bardoul. Simon and Isabel had two children:
- Amaury II de Montfort (born around 1056 – died 1089), who later became the lord of Montfort.
- Isabel (Elizabeth) de Montfort (born 1057), who married Raoul II de Tosny. Raoul was a knight who fought alongside William the Conqueror.
Second Marriage
Simon then married Agnes d'Évreux, who was born in 1030. She was the daughter of Richard, Count of Évreux. Simon and Agnes had several children:
- Bertrade de Montfort (born around 1059 – died 1117), who later became a queen of France.
- Richard de Montfort (born around 1066 – died 1092), who also became lord of Montfort. He died during an attack on an abbey in Conches.
- Simon II de Montfort (born around 1068 – died 1104), who became lord of Montfort.
- Amaury III de Montfort (born around 1070 – died 1137), who became lord of Montfort and also the Count of Évreux.
- Guillaume de Montfort (born around 1073 – died 1101), who became a bishop in Paris.
- Adeliza de Montfort (born 1075).
