Sir Symon Locard: A Brave Scottish Knight

Sir Symon Locard was an important figure in Scottish history. He lived during a time of great change. Knights like him were vital in protecting their country. He was known for his courage in battles against the English.

Carrying the King's Heart

After Robert the Bruce passed away in 1329, his friend Sir James Douglas had a special task. King Robert's last wish was for his heart to be taken to the Holy Land. He wanted it placed in the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

King Robert's heart was put into a beautiful silver box. Sir James Douglas carried this box. It is said that Sir Symon Locard was given a very important job. He was trusted with the key to this precious box.

A family historian wrote about this journey: "In 1329, a group of Scottish knights began a journey. They were fulfilling their dead King's last wish. Their leader, Lord James Douglas, carried the King's heart. It was in 'a fine silver case, beautifully decorated.' Sir Symon Locard rode beside him. He carried the key to the box. Sir Symon was famous for his bravery against the English. Now, he was trusted with the key to the precious box."

This mission showed the deep loyalty of these knights. They honored their King even after his death. Sir Symon Locard played a small but important part in this historic journey.
