Simoom Sound is a small place in British Columbia, Canada. It is known for its post office, which is located in a community called Echo Bay, British Columbia. This area is found on Gilford Island, which is part of the beautiful Central Coast region.

The name "Simoom Sound" actually refers to a nearby body of water. This water body was named after a ship called HMS Simoom. Interestingly, the name "Simoom Sound" used to describe a different spot. It was once a steamer landing on the Wishart Peninsula. However, when that area became empty, the name and the post office moved to Echo Bay.

The Story Behind the Name and Location

The Simoom Sound Post Office first opened its doors on August 1, 1912. Back then, it was located on the Wishart Peninsula, facing the Simoom Sound water body.

Over time, the post office moved. Before June 28, 1943, it was relocated to the west side of Gilford Island. This new spot was likely near a seaplane base, just outside of Echo Bay.

Then, sometime before February 1967, the post office moved again. This time, it moved less than a mile south, right into the main settlement of Echo Bay.

In January 1983, there was a plan to close the Simoom Sound Post Office. However, this decision was changed. So, the Simoom Sound Post Office, now located within the community of Echo Bay, is still open today.
