Where Does Sims Creek Flow?

Sims Creek starts near a town called Robert. From there, it generally flows towards the southeast.

P-Kaw-Shun Creek Joins In

About halfway along its path, Sims Creek is joined by another stream called P-Kaw-Shun Creek. P-Kaw-Shun Creek starts north of a place called Lorraine. It flows southwest, passing under major roads like US 190 and Interstate 12, before meeting Sims Creek.

Journey to the Tangipahoa River

After P-Kaw-Shun Creek joins it, Sims Creek continues flowing southwest. It passes under another road, LA 445. Finally, Sims Creek meets the Tangipahoa River about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) south of Robert.

Why is Sims Creek Important?

Sims Creek is part of a larger natural area called the Lake Pontchartrain Basin. A "basin" is like a big bowl where all the water from rivers and streams collects and eventually flows into a larger body of water, in this case, Lake Pontchartrain.

Protecting the Environment

Because it's part of this basin, Sims Creek is very important for the environment, or "ecology," of the area. The health of Sims Creek affects the health of Lake Pontchartrain and all the plants and animals that live there.

Public Water Flow

Sims Creek also plays a big role in "public drainage." This means it helps carry away rainwater and keeps the land from flooding. Because of its importance, the state of Louisiana protects it. In 2007, the state's top lawyer, called the attorney general, said that no one could build a private fence across Sims Creek. This decision was made to make sure the creek could always flow freely and help with public drainage.
