The Sino-British Joint Liaison Group (also called the Joint Liaison Group) was a special meeting group. It was created in 1985 by the governments of the United Kingdom and China.

This group was formed after they signed the Sino–British Joint Declaration. This agreement was about handing over Hong Kong from Britain to China. The main goal was to make sure this handover in 1997 went smoothly.

The group helped by talking, sharing information, and working together. It stopped its work on December 31, 1999. This was two years after Hong Kong became part of China.

What the Group Did

The Joint Liaison Group had important jobs to do. Its main purpose was to help carry out the Joint Declaration. They also discussed how to make the transfer of government in 1997 smooth.

The group also shared information and talked about other topics. Both sides had to agree on these topics.

Here are some of the specific tasks the group worked on:

  • They helped Hong Kong keep its economic ties. This meant Hong Kong could stay a separate customs area.
  • They made sure Hong Kong could still be part of international groups. These included the World Trade Organization.
  • They worked to ensure Hong Kong's international rights and duties continued.
  • They planned the steps for a smooth changeover in 1997.
  • They helped Hong Kong keep and grow its economic and cultural links. This included making agreements with other countries and groups.
