Early Life
Siobhan Maire Fahey was born in County Meath, Ireland. She has two younger sisters, Maire and Niamh. Her parents, Helen and Joseph Fahey, were from County Tipperary, Ireland.
When Siobhan was young, her father joined the British Army. The family moved from Ireland to England, and then to Germany. They returned to England when Siobhan was nine. At age 14, her family moved to Hertfordshire. Two years later, she moved to London on her own. There, she became part of the city's punk music scene in the late 1970s.
Music Career
Bananarama (1981–1988, 2017–2018)
Fahey studied fashion journalism at the London College of Fashion. In 1980, she met Sara Dallin. Together with their friend Keren Woodward, they started the group Bananarama.
The group recorded their first song in 1981. They soon began working with another band, Fun Boy Three, and had two hit songs with them. Soon after, Bananarama had their own hit with the song "Shy Boy". Fahey co-wrote many of the group's biggest songs. These included "Cruel Summer", "Robert De Niro's Waiting...", and "Love in the First Degree".
Shakespears Sister (1988–1996)
By 1988, Fahey was unhappy with the musical style of Bananarama. She decided to leave the group to start her own project, Shakespears Sister. At first, Shakespears Sister was just Fahey. Later, American singer Marcella Detroit joined, and they became a duo.
Their song "Stay" was a huge success in 1992. It was number one on the UK Singles Chart for eight weeks. It also won a Brit Award for Best British Video. Fahey was known for her unique and dramatic style in music videos and on stage.
After two successful albums, Fahey and Detroit began to have disagreements. They decided to split up in 1993. After this difficult time, Fahey took a break to focus on her health. In 1996, she continued Shakespears Sister by herself and released a new song.
Later Work and Reunions
Fahey has reunited with Bananarama a few times for special performances. In 1998, they recorded a cover of ABBA's song "Waterloo" for a TV special. In 2002, they performed together for the band's 20th anniversary.
In 2009, Fahey brought back the name Shakespears Sister for a new album called Songs from the Red Room. In 2017, she officially rejoined Bananarama for a full tour across the U.K. This was the first time she had toured with the band.
In 2019, Fahey and Marcella Detroit reunited as Shakespears Sister. They appeared on TV and went on tour together again.
Personal Life
In 1987, Fahey married Dave Stewart from the band Eurythmics. They had two sons, Samuel and Django, before they divorced in 1996. Both of their sons are musicians. Samuel is a guitarist for the band Lo Moon, and Django is also an actor.
Before her marriage, Fahey co-wrote the song "Young at Heart" with Bobby Bluebell. The song became a number one hit in the U.K.
