About Siobhan Fahey's Early Life
Siobhan Maire Fahey was born on September 10, 1958, in County Meath, Ireland. She has two younger sisters, Maire and Niamh. Her parents, Helen and Joseph Fahey, were both from County Tipperary, Ireland.
Siobhan lived in Ireland for several years. Then, her family moved to England because her father joined the British Army. They also lived in Germany for a few years before returning to England when Siobhan was nine. When she was 14, her family moved to Harpenden, Hertfordshire. Two years later, she moved to London. There, she became part of the exciting punk music scene in the late 1970s.
Siobhan Fahey's Music Career
Starting with Bananarama (1981–1988, 2017–2018)
Siobhan Fahey studied fashion journalism at the London College of Fashion. In 1980, she met Sara Dallin there. Together with Keren Woodward, they formed the group Bananarama. Their first song, "Aie a Mwana", was recorded in 1981.
Bananarama worked with the group Fun Boy Three in 1982. They released two popular songs together. Later that year, Bananarama had their own hit song called "Shy Boy". Siobhan, Sara, and Keren wrote many of Bananarama's famous songs. These include "Cruel Summer", "Robert De Niro's Waiting...", "I Heard a Rumour", and "Love in the First Degree".
Forming Shakespears Sister (1988–1996)
In 1988, Siobhan Fahey decided to leave Bananarama. She wanted to try a different style of music. She then started her own project called Shakespears Sister. At first, it was just Siobhan. Later, American singer and songwriter Marcella Detroit joined, making it a duo.
Their song "Stay" was a huge hit in 1992. It stayed at number one on the UK Singles Chart for eight weeks! The music video for "Stay" won a Brit Award in 1993. Siobhan often appeared in the band's music videos and on stage looking like a cool, dramatic rock star. After two successful albums, Siobhan and Marcella decided to go their separate ways in 1993.
In 1996, Siobhan continued Shakespears Sister by herself. She released the song "I Can Drive". However, the record company decided not to release the full album. Siobhan later got the rights to her music. She released the album, called #3, on her own website in 2004.
Music Since 1997
Siobhan Fahey briefly rejoined Bananarama in 1998. They recorded a cover of ABBA's "Waterloo" for a TV show. They also reunited in 2002 for a special 20th-anniversary concert.
Siobhan kept making music in the 2000s. In 2005, she released The MGA Sessions, an album she recorded with her friend and collaborator, Sophie Muller. Her song "Bad Blood" was released as a single in 2005.
A pop group called The Pussycat Dolls used parts of Siobhan's song "Bitter Pill" in their 2005 album. They combined it with parts of Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff". The new song was called "Hot Stuff (I Want You Back)".
In 2009, Siobhan brought back the Shakespears Sister name. She released a new album called Songs from the Red Room. This album included some songs she had released on her own. She also performed her first live show as Shakespears Sister in nearly 15 years. In 2014, she performed with Dexys Midnight Runners at the Glastonbury Festival.
In 2017, Siobhan joined her old Bananarama bandmates for a tour in the UK. This was the first time she had toured live as a member of Bananarama. In 2019, Siobhan reunited with Marcella Detroit for more Shakespears Sister shows. They even appeared on The Graham Norton Show on BBC1.
Siobhan Fahey's Family Life
Siobhan Fahey married Dave Stewart from the band Eurythmics in 1987. They later divorced in 1996. They have two sons, Samuel (born 1987) and Django James (born 1991).
