David Allan Stewart (born 9 September 1952) is an English musician, songwriter, and record producer. He is most famous for being half of the music duo Eurythmics, where he worked with Annie Lennox. People sometimes call him David A. Stewart. He won the Best British Producer award at the Brit Awards in 1986, 1987, and 1990.
Stewart and Lennox were added to the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020. They were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. Besides Eurythmics, Stewart has written and produced songs for many famous artists. These include Ringo Starr, Stevie Nicks, Mick Jagger, and Tom Petty.

Early Life and First Bands
Stewart was born in 1952 in Sunderland, England. His father loved music and had a great stereo system. Dave started playing music when he was young.
As a teenager, he got a record deal with a folk-rock band called Longdancer. They were signed to Elton John's record label, but they did not become famous. Later, in 1976, he met Annie Lennox. They became friends and started making music together.
In 1977, Stewart and Lennox formed a band called The Catch. They later changed their name to The Tourists. This band had some success, including a hit song in 1979 called "I Only Want to Be with You".
Eurythmics
The Tourists broke up in 1980. Stewart and Lennox also ended their romantic relationship but decided to keep working together on music. They formed a new band called Eurythmics.
Eurythmics became very successful with many hit songs and albums. The duo stopped working together in 1990. However, they reunited in 1999 for an album called Peace and a world tour. They also worked together in 2005. They recorded two new songs for a greatest hits album called Ultimate Collection. This was to celebrate Eurythmics' 25th anniversary.
Music After Eurythmics
When Eurythmics ended in 1990, Stewart moved to France. He quickly started a new band called The Spiritual Cowboys. Their first album did well in the UK. A second album, Honest, followed in 1991. Both albums sold very well in France.
In 1992, Stewart worked with singer Terry Hall on a project called Vegas. They released one album, but it was not a big hit.
Stewart also appeared in an Apple Inc. advertisement in 1993. He also had a small role in the 1995 movie Hackers.
In 1994, Stewart released a solo album called Greetings from the Gutter. It was not a huge success, but one song, "Heart Of Stone", was a minor hit in the UK. He later released another album, Sly-Fi, first on the internet.
In 2002, Stewart worked with former South African president Nelson Mandela. Stewart helped create the 46664 campaign. This campaign raised money and awareness to fight HIV/AIDS in South Africa. He organized a series of concerts for this cause.
In 2007, Stewart announced he would play live concerts. He planned to perform songs from his whole career. He also started writing new songs on his guitar.
In 2008, Stewart released a book called The Dave Stewart Songbook. It was full of stories and photos. He also re-recorded 21 hit songs he had helped write or produce. These songs were originally by artists like No Doubt, Shakespears Sister, Bryan Ferry, and Celine Dion. He also released a new solo song, Let's Do It Again, in 2008.
In 2010, Stewart recorded his first solo album of new songs since 1998. It was called The Blackbird Diaries. This album included duets with Stevie Nicks, Martina McBride, and Colbie Caillat.
In May 2011, it was announced that Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones formed a new supergroup called SuperHeavy. This group included Dave Stewart, Joss Stone, Damian Marley, and A. R. Rahman.
In 2012, Stewart played four UK shows to support his new album, The Ringmaster General. In 2013, he released the album Lucky Numbers. This album was recorded on a boat in the South Pacific.
In 2017, Stewart appeared on German TV with singer Nena. They performed their song "Be My Rebel".
Other Creative Work
As a Writer and Producer
Stewart produced or co-produced all of Eurythmics' albums. Once the band became famous, he also started producing for other artists. In 1985, he co-produced the album Southern Accents for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He also co-wrote several songs for the album, including the hit "Don't Come Around Here No More". That same year, Stewart produced the first solo album by Feargal Sharkey. This album included the UK number one hit "A Good Heart". Because of these achievements, Stewart won "Best Producer" at the 1986 BRIT Awards.
Stewart continued to write and produce for many other artists over the years. In 1986, he worked with Bob Geldof. He also co-produced an album for Daryl Hall. That same year, he co-wrote and produced the song "Is This Love?" by Alison Moyet, which was a UK Top 3 hit.
Stewart also co-wrote and co-produced several songs for Mick Jagger's 1987 album Primitive Cool. In 1989, he produced the first album by Russian singer Boris Grebenshchikov.
In 1992, he co-wrote the Shakespears Sister hit single "Stay" with his then-wife, Siobhan Fahey. He used the name "Jean Guiot" for this.
In 1997, Stewart co-produced an album for Jon Bon Jovi. He also co-wrote two songs for it. That same year, he produced and co-wrote an album called Come Alive with actress and singer Rhona Mitra.
He also co-wrote "Friend or Foe" for the Russian pop duo t.A.T.u.. In 2008, Ringo Starr asked Stewart to produce his album Liverpool 8.
In 2010, Stewart announced he was co-writing and producing a new album for Stevie Nicks. The album, In Your Dreams, was released in May 2011. He also produced a new album by Joss Stone in 2011.
He has worked with American ska-punk band No Doubt. He co-wrote "Underneath It All" for their 2001 album and "Sparkle" for their 2012 album.
In 2017, Stewart co-wrote and produced New Zealand singer Jon Stevens' album Starlight. He also co-wrote and produced Australian singer Vanessa Amorosi's album, Memphis Love, which was released in November 2023.
Film, Television, and Soundtracks
Stewart co-wrote the theme song for the 1986 comedy film Ruthless People with Mick Jagger and Daryl Hall. In 1989, he became more involved in films. He wrote and produced the soundtrack Lily Was Here for the Dutch film De Kassière. The single, "Lily Was Here", featuring saxophone player Candy Dulfer, was a number one hit in the Netherlands. It also reached the UK Top 10 and the US Top 20.
In 2000, he directed his first feature film, Honest. This was a comedy set in London in the 1960s.
Stewart also performed the song "Everybody, All Over The World (Join The Celebration)" for the 2004 film Around the World in 80 Days.
He collaborated with Mick Jagger to record songs for the soundtrack of the 2004 movie Alfie. The soundtrack included the song "Old Habits Die Hard", which won a Golden Globe award for Best Original Song.
In 2012, Stewart was an executive co-producer for the TV series Living The Life on Sky Arts. He also created and executive produced the 2012 ABC sitcom Malibu Country.
Stewart also created and executive produces the NBC series Songland. This show gives new songwriters a chance to have their songs recorded by famous artists. The series premiered in 2019 and was very popular.
Musical Theatre
Stewart wrote the musical Barbarella, based on the 1968 film. It first opened in Vienna in 2004. Stewart later wrote music and lyrics for Ghost the Musical with Glen Ballard. This musical opened in Manchester in 2011 and then moved to London's West End. It also opened on Broadway in 2012.
In 2021, Stewart worked with Joss Stone to create a new stage production of The Time Traveller's Wife. This show premiered in Chester in 2022 and then moved to London's West End in October 2023.
Record Label
Stewart formed his own record label in the 1980s called Anxious Records. This label has released music by artists like Terry Hall and Londonbeat.
Platinum Weird
In 2006, Stewart brought back a band called Platinum Weird. He said he had formed this band in the 1970s with singer Erin Grace. However, the band was actually created in 2004. Platinum Weird features songwriter Kara DioGuardi on vocals. They re-recorded some old songs and made new ones for an album.
In July 2006, VH1 showed a fake documentary called Rock Legends – Platinum Weird. It told the band's unusual story and included famous musicians like Mick Jagger and Annie Lennox.
Personal Life
Dave Stewart has been married three times. He was married to Pamela Wilkinson from 1972 to 1977. He was in a relationship with Annie Lennox for three years before they formed Eurythmics.
In 1987, Stewart married Siobhan Fahey, who was a member of Bananarama and later formed Shakespears Sister. They have two sons, Sam and Django. They divorced in 1996.
On 4 August 2001, Stewart married Dutch photographer Anoushka Fisz. They have two daughters, Kaya and Indya. In 2004, Stewart and Fisz moved to Hollywood. They renewed their marriage vows in 2013.
Stewart supports the Sunderland A.F.C. football team. He still watches their games. When he was a child, he wanted to play for the club.
In 2023, he went with his daughter, Kaya, when she auditioned for American Idol.
Awards and Recognition
Stewart has received many awards for his music. In 2000, he received the O2 Silver Clef Award. He was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2015, he won the Music Producers Guild Outstanding Contribution to UK Music Award. Eurythmics was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
