t.A.T.u. (Russian: Тату) was a popular music duo from Russia. The group was made up of two singers, Lena Katina and Julia Volkova. Before t.A.T.u., both Lena and Julia were part of a children's music group called Neposedy.
Later, they started working with producer Ivan Shapovalov. They signed with a Russian record company called Neformat. Their first album, 200 Po Vstrechnoy, came out in 2001. It was very successful in Eastern Europe.
Because of this success, t.A.T.u. signed with Interscope Records. This allowed them to release an English version of their album. It was called 200 km/h in the Wrong Lane and came out in 2002. This album sold over one million copies in Europe. It was also the first album by a foreign group to reach number one in Japan. The album also sold well in the United States. It featured famous songs like "All the Things She Said" and "Not Gonna Get Us".
In 2003, t.A.T.u. represented Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest. They sang the song "Ne ver', ne boysia" and finished in third place.
After working with Ivan Shapovalov for some time, the duo decided to go their own way. In 2005, they released two new albums. These were Dangerous and Moving and Lyudi Invalidy. These albums were also quite successful. The song "All About Us" from Dangerous and Moving became an international hit.
t.A.T.u. also worked on other projects. They started their own company called T.A. Music. They also helped promote a movie called You and I in 2008. This film was inspired by their story. Their last two albums were Vesyolye Ulybki (2008) and Waste Management (2009).
t.A.T.u. officially stopped making music together in 2011. Lena Katina and Julia Volkova then started their own solo music careers. However, they did get back together for special performances. One notable performance was at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics.
