Ivan Nikolayevich Shapovalov (born May 28, 1966) is a music producer from Moscow, Russia. He is most famous for starting and managing the popular music group t.A.T.u..
Ivan Shapovalov's Music Career
Early Work and t.A.T.u.
Before becoming a music producer, Ivan Shapovalov worked as a child psychologist. He also worked in advertising. In 1999, he started making music videos. That same year, Shapovalov and his team created the group t.A.T.u.. This group brought him much success.
He directed the music video for t.A.T.u.'s 2002 song "All the Things She Said". Ivan helped the girls become stars as their producer. They had a unique and sometimes surprising style. He also formed a production company called Neformat with Boris Renski.
In May 2003, while t.A.T.u. was filming a video, Shapovalov was briefly arrested. This happened after he organized about 200 girls for filming near the Kremlin. Also in 2003, Shapovalov started a project called Podnebesnaya. He wanted to improve his producing skills. He worked with many artists and became the producer for bands like 7B and singer n.A.T.o..
However, in 2004, t.A.T.u. decided to leave Shapovalov and Neformat. They wanted to continue their music career on their own. t.A.T.u. then signed with Universal Music. Boris Renski became their main producer.
The n.A.T.o. Project
In 2004, Shapovalov began a new music project with a sixteen-year-old singer named Natalia Shevliakova. He found her online. Shapovalov said that Shevliakova's image was not meant to be violent. He explained that "associations are born in the minds of the viewers." He also stated that "n.A.T.o. is simply a female singer with a headscarf and a veil."
Her first concert was planned for a sensitive date. It was the third anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The concert was cancelled after a tragic event, the Beslan school siege. This cancellation was made out of respect and safety concerns. Shapovalov took legal action against the venue for cancelling. He said he was not told about the cancellation properly.
n.A.T.o. eventually performed live in January 2005. This was at a Moscow nightclub called Tinkov Brewery. However, the n.A.T.o. project was not very successful. Audiences found the performance disappointing. The promotion did not lead to strong sales for her first album.
