Ivan Nikolayevich Shapovalov (Иван Николаевич Шаповалов, born on May 28, 1966) is a music producer from Moscow, Russia. He is most famous for starting and managing the popular music group t.A.T.u..

Ivan Shapovalov's Career in Music

Early Work and Creating t.A.T.u.

Before becoming a music producer, Ivan Shapovalov worked with children as a psychologist. He also worked in advertising. In 1999, he started making music videos.

That same year, Shapovalov teamed up with Voitinskyi, Sergio Galoyan, Renski, and Elena Kiper. Together, they created the music group t.A.T.u.. This group brought Shapovalov a lot of success. He directed the music video for t.A.T.u.'s first big song, "Ya Soshla S Uma" (also known as "All the Things She Said") in 2000. Ivan helped the girls become stars with their unique and attention-grabbing style. He also produced their music through his company, Neformat, which he started with Renski.

In May 2003, while t.A.T.u. was filming for the Eurovision Song Contest 2003, Shapovalov had an incident with authorities. This happened when he organized 200 girls for filming near the Kremlin. Also in 2003, Shapovalov started a project called Podnebesnaya. This project helped him develop his skills as a producer even more. He worked with many artists and became the producer for bands like 7B and the singer n.A.T.o..

However, in 2004, t.A.T.u. decided to leave Shapovalov and Neformat to continue their music journey on their own. t.A.T.u. then signed with Universal Music. Boris Renski became their main producer.

The n.A.T.o. Project (2004-2005)

In 2004, Shapovalov began a new music project with a sixteen-year-old singer named Natalia Shevliakova. He found her online. She performed under the name n.A.T.o.. Shevliakova sang songs in Persian about love and loss. Her music style was similar to t.A.T.u.'s.

The music video for her first song, "Chor Javon," showed Shevliakova appearing on news channels. Due to some concerns, the video was later removed from her website. Shapovalov explained that n.A.T.o.'s image was not meant to be harmful. He said that people's ideas about it came from their own thoughts. He stated that "n.A.T.o. is simply a female singer with a headscarf and a veil."

Her first concert was planned for a sensitive date. However, it was canceled due to public safety concerns and strong reactions from Russian government officials. Shapovalov took legal action against the venue that canceled the event. He said he was not properly told about the cancellation. He also thought it was unfair because the venue hosted other events but not his "theatrical show."

n.A.T.o. eventually performed live for the first time in January 2005. This happened at Tinkov Brewery, a nightclub in Moscow. The n.A.T.o. project was not very successful. Audiences found the performance underwhelming, and the promotion did not lead to many sales for her first album.
