Early Life and Military Service
Anselm Guise was the son of Sir William Francis George Guise, who was the 5th Baronet in their family line. His mother was Ada Caroline Coope. Anselm went to a famous school called Eton College.
When the First World War began, Anselm joined the army. He became an officer in a group called the Gloucestershire Yeomanry and eventually reached the rank of captain.
Taking Care of the Family Estate
On January 17, 1920, Anselm became the 6th Baronet after his father passed away. A "Baronet" is a special title that is passed down through families, similar to a knight, but it's inherited. The Guise family's baronetcy was first created in 1783.
Anselm inherited a large amount of land, about 623 acres (252 hectares). This land was part of the Elmore estate, which had been in his family since 1262! Soon after inheriting, he decided to sell some of the land. However, he kept Elmore Court, which was the family home, and a farm. He also gave Lassington Wood to the Gloucester County Borough Council. This gift was a way to celebrate his family's long history with the city of Gloucester.
Anselm also inherited a collection of art. In 1921, he sold a painting called "Madonna Adoring the Christ Child" by an artist named Francesco Botticini. This painting had been part of his mother's family collection.
Public Service in Gloucestershire
In 1922, Anselm became a Justice of the Peace for Gloucestershire. This meant he helped keep law and order in the county, acting like a local judge. In 1926, he was chosen to be the High Sheriff of Gloucestershire. The High Sheriff is a very old and important role, representing the King or Queen in the county and helping with legal matters.
Family Life
On January 23, 1924, Anselm Guise married Nina Margaret Sophie Grant. Her father was Sir James Augustus Grant, who was also a Baronet. Anselm and Nina had three children:
- Philippa Margaret (born 1926)
- John Grant (1927–2007), who later became the 7th Baronet
- Christopher James Guise (born 1930), who later became the 8th Baronet
Their daughter, Philippa, married Alastair Hugh Joseph Fraser. He was from Moniack Castle. Philippa and Alastair had four sons and two daughters between 1951 and 1964.
