Sir Arthur William Mackworth, 6th Baronet (born October 5, 1842 – died March 8, 1914) was a brave Welsh soldier. He held important titles like DL, JP, and was a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB).
Early Life and Family
Arthur was the son of Sir Digby Francis Mackworth, 5th Baronet. His mother was Mathilde Eleanor Eliza Peddie.
When his father passed away in 1857, young Arthur was just fifteen years old. He then became the 6th Baronet Mackworth. A Baronet is a special title, like a hereditary knighthood.
Military Career
Sir Arthur joined the Royal Engineers in 1861 as a Lieutenant. He moved up the ranks, becoming a Captain in 1873 and a Major in 1881. By 1882, he was a Lieutenant-Colonel.
He took part in the Egyptian Campaign of 1882, which was a military operation in Egypt. From 1883 to 1888, he led the Royal Engineers, South Wales. He became a Colonel in 1886.
Later, he commanded the Royal Engineers in the West Indies from 1888 to 1889. He also led the Royal Engineers in Aldershot from 1894 to 1899.
Public Service
Besides his military work, Sir Arthur also served his community. He was a Justice of the Peace for Monmouthshire. This meant he helped keep law and order.
He was also a Deputy Lieutenant of Monmouthshire. This is a senior role that supports the Lord-Lieutenant, who represents the King or Queen in a county. In 1897, he was made a Companion of the Order of the Bath, which is a special honor given for excellent service.
Family Life
Sir Arthur Mackworth married Alice Kate Cubitt on October 18, 1865. They got married in Paris, France. Together, they had twelve children.
Some of their children included:
- Digby Mackworth (1868–1900), who sadly died during the Second Boer War in Ladysmith.
- Sir Humphrey Mackworth, 7th Baronet (1871–1948), who inherited the Baronet title after his father.
- Francis Julian Audley Mackworth (1876–1914), who was killed in action during World War I.
- Sir Harry Llewellyn Mackworth, 8th Baronet (1878–1952), who also became a Baronet.
- Vice-Admiral Geoffrey Mackworth (1879–1952), who had a successful career in the navy.
Sir Arthur passed away on March 8, 1914. His wife, Lady Mackworth, died the following year on March 25, 1915.
Later Generations
Through his son Geoffrey, Sir Arthur was the grandfather of Sir David Arthur Geoffrey Mackworth, 9th Baronet (1912–1998). David was a famous aviator.
