Sir Humphrey Mackworth (born July 11, 1871 – died August 25, 1948) was a Welsh soldier and a Baronet. A Baronet is a special title given by the King or Queen, which can be passed down in a family. Sir Humphrey was the 7th person in his family to hold this title. He also served as a Justice of the Peace, which means he helped keep law and order in his local area.
Early Life and Education
Humphrey Mackworth was born on July 11, 1871. His father was Sir Arthur William Mackworth, who was the 6th Baronet in their family. His mother was Alice Kate Cubitt. Humphrey's grandparents were Sir Digby Francis Mackworth, the 5th Baronet, and Mathilde Eleanor Eliza Peddie. Sadly, his older brother, Digby, passed away during the Second Boer War in a place called Ladysmith.
Humphrey went to school at Marlborough College in Wiltshire. After that, he attended Oxford Military College in Cowley. There, he became a Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion of the Royal West Surrey Regiment. This was an important step in his military career.
Military Career and Baronetcy
Sir Humphrey Mackworth was a brave soldier. He fought in the Second Boer War, which was a conflict in South Africa. He also held the important role of a Justice of the Peace for Monmouthshire, helping with local justice.
In 1902, he became a Captain in the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers. Later, between 1915 and 1919, he served as a Captain in the Remount Service. This service was responsible for providing horses for the army.
When his father passed away on March 8, 1914, Humphrey became the 7th Mackworth Baronet of The Gnoll, Glamorgan. This meant he inherited the special family title.
